The “fat shot” means that a golfer is hitting the ground behind the ball instead of the ball itself. This can be a very frustrating habit that takes its toll on your scorecard, not to mention your ego!

Fortunately, there is an easy solution to this problem.

The issue is typically nothing more than your head (yes, your head, not the club head) changing its plane during the swing, which in turn changes the plane of the swing itself. This happens from either dipping your head before impact or allowing your head to sway to the right during the backswing.

The cure is obviously to keep a steady head throughout the entire swing. If hitting fat is a frequent mistake you make, try taking some practice shots and have a partner pay close attention to your head to see if it is dipping or swaying.

If it is dipping, then just stop. If your head is swaying, you can help yourself by pushing down hard against the inside of the right foot during the backswing, thus preventing any tendency to shift your head to the right.

There is a unique sand shot that could otherwise be a little known secret amongst professional golfers. It was years ago during the British Open when I saw Phil Rogers take a bunker shot I’ve never seen before.

The setup for this secret bunker shot must have the ball located in the sand very near the back bank of the bunker. And the bunker wall must be so steep that you will not be able to draw the club back in your normal fashion.

This particular shot can be attempted hundreds of times without success unless you have the right recipe. Here are the instructions:

1. Simply assume your normal trap-shot stance.
2. Now pick the club straight up, but breaking your arms the same as you would if you were picking up an ax before chopping a piece of wood.
3. Now hit down approximately 2 inches high on the ball with overly strong right-handed action.

There cannot be any follow-through all or else the clubhead will bury itself into the sand. The arc of the shot is up and down instead of back and forth, just like a woodcutter, but your shot will be a success.

Every golf shot combines two basic elements: One is judging distance and the effects of the terrain and wind on the ball. The other is a complete execution of your swing. When it comes to putting, the mental calculations count more for for this shot than any other shot you will make.

Putt shots will also prove to be more difficult as well, but there are ways to help yourself.

Many golfers simply pace the distance to the cup. Instead of this common practice, try to just stand over the ball and look at the line to the hole, while at the same time measuring the distance in 5 or 10 foot intervals. Then check the texture of the grass and remember this last important tip: Take notice of which direction the grass is growing!

You obviously do not have to hit a putt as hard when the grass is growing towards the hole, as opposed of growing towards you, but the grain can be a little difficult to see unless you look closely. So take a moment and use the direction of the grass growth as a gauge to aid in how much power you need (or less) in your putt.

99% of all golf players have battled with the problem of the slice at some point on the course. And to be honest, dealing with a bad slice shot can hurt your golf game tremendously. To help you with a simple tip on ending your slicing problems forever, follow the easy and practical set of instructions as outlined below.

But first, as a quick disclaimer, while the following technique will work for most of you, I cannot guarantee that every single player will follow these guidelines strictly. So it’s up to you to take this knowledge and get yourself on the golf course for some real-time practice.

There Are Only 2 Ingredients That Cause The Ball To Slice

The first thing you must understand is that there are only two variables which can determine the direction of the ball’s flight path: The club face angle and direction in which the club is traveling as it hits the ball. Once you understand these two factors, the next step is to concentrate on the following:

Pay Attention To Your Leading Shoulder

When it comes to your shoulders, try keeping the front shoulder down, towards the ball, and through impact. The term for this technique is called “staying strong” through the ball’s impact. Many golf players never realize just how much their leading shoulder “pops up” just before the club face makes contact with the ball. This has an immediate effect with changing the way the ball travels, which of course is never the way you intend it.

If this is a surprise to you, then quickly see for yourself. Go ahead and step away from the computer and go through your swing motions very slowly. Pay attention to the front shoulder as your impact is approached and look at the club face. You can literally see and feel the club face coming in from the outside-in direction, which of course is the cause of your slice.

Hand & Forearm Details

The second key factor in removing your slice problem on the golf course is by paying attention to the way your hand grips and releases. You have to learn the correct way to release your hands through the ball.

In other words, you have to release the hands while your front shoulder (the leading shoulder) is kept down and facing the ball. In order to do this, the forearms must rotate correctly and your front elbow (leading elbow) must act as a kind of hinge.

By following these simple guidelines, you should practice keeping your front shoulder down and letting your forearms and hands release smoothly through ball, helping you end your slice. Once this all becomes a habit, your ball will also show more distance and height on every shot you make.

Most golf students who have trouble putting all have one thing in common: they tend to grip the putter in the exact same manner that they grip the other clubs in their bag, using an overlapping grip or an interlocking grip. These students have no idea just how important it is to hold the putter differently for the best results.

The Reverse Overlap Grip

For using the best possible grip when making your putt shots, try learning the “reverse overlap grip” which is a favorite with amateur golfers and Tour professionals. This type of grip will help keep the putterface perfectly square to the ark of your stroke. The face will also travel right down through the target line. Here is a very simple 4 step drill to using the reverse overlap grip.

Step 1: Take your putter and hold it upside down so that the clubface is pointing towards the sky, and with both hands the grip should be right in front of your face, kind of like holding a baseball bat before a swing.

Holding the club this way will help you learn the proper set up for the reverse overlap grip. If you try to find it by gripping the putter in its normal fashion, close to the ground, it may be too difficult to adjust your hands to.

Step 2: Now take your left hand and place it on the putter handle. Your thumb should be pointing down the shaft and your index finger should be kept off for now.

Step 3: The next step is to take the fleshy part of your right hand and put it on the flat part of your grip. The thumbs should be pointing down. So far, if you have correctly followed these instructions, all of your fingers should be neatly wrapped around the handle of your putter, all except for your left index finger.

Step 4: Finally, take your right hand and slide it down the shaft just until your left thumbnail is covered up. Both of your thumbs should be pointing straight down the shaft, and your left index finger will overlap the fingers from your right hand.

Once you get used to putting with this grip, you should see immediate improvement on your shots. And the reason why it is important to hold the putter like this is because your standard grips (overlapping and interlocking) will cause unwanted rotation of the clubface, which is obviously disastrous when you need a dead-on straight putt.

However, most pros will also exploit their golf accessories in many which ways. If you do the same, it will help improve your game and reduce your handicap as well.

Many pros will attach golf weights to the ends of their clubs. Then they practice their slow swings with the additional weights. This offers 3 distinct benefits –

One, they can quickly develop the correct set of muscles due to the additional resistance.

Second, the extra weights add some zing to their regular training and helps in boosting motivation levels. This in turn, allows the pros to come to the greens and practice regularly, without fail.

And third, it allows them to use the lighter clubs with greater power and accuracy so that their long shots cover a respectable distance with unerring precision.

Pros will also invest a bit of money in another critical accessory – a putting green. This allows them to practice everyday, often, twice a day.

They also prefer using the same putter and same balls that they might use on the golfing green for better control. Pros also watch other pros putting and swinging.

So feel free to rent, buy, download, or borrow instructional DVDs or VHSs. If you watch other pros then it might help you develop better swings which might help shave a few critical points off your total score.

Agreed, online shopping is the in-thing. Almost everyone and their caddy are clicking away online. Websites offer lucrative deals and all sorts of unimaginable variety of golf accessories.

Let’s face it, shopping for golf accessories cannot be made more fun or more simple than clicking a button.

But watch out, sitting at home and shopping with such ease can also be dangerous. Your credit card details can fall in the wrong hands and unknown strangers can use those details to run up humungous bills.

Spurious websites also sell your personal details to other companies who then badger you with unwanted phone calls, unsolicited emails, flyers, brochures, and what-have-yous.

Some sites even insert malicious code on your computer, known as a virus, which then secretly captures and sends information like your bank passwords to hackers, etc.

In order to avoid these dangers, just take simple precautionary steps when you shop online for your golf accessories

- only shop at websites which are well-known and popular like eBay

- regardless of the ‘great deal’ or the ‘fabulous offer’ avoid visiting unknown websites

- Look for the padlock on the bottom right of your browser. This indicates that the site is relatively safe

- Always use the best anti-virus and anti-spy ware like Norton which gets rid of malicious code installed on your PC

- Close your browser immediately if you see any suspicious activity at a website

Such simple measures will help you shop online for your golf accessories in relative peace and security.

Perhaps the most expensive accessory you’ll ever buy are your golf clubs. But even after shelling out a pocket for them, most golfers don’t look after their clubs properly or don’t know how to do so.

Since you have invested time, money, and a lot of thought in purchasing your golf clubs, you should consider spending a little more effort in maintaining, storing, and using them properly.

First, consider the golf bag itself. Before you buy one, ensure that that the sides are toughened with some metal, like maybe steel. This helps protect your clubs in case the golf bag falls out of the cart or if it hits other objects.

To prevent theft of your clubs, see if you can buy a golf bag with a flap or a door on the top. The flap should come with a lock mechanism, for example, a number protected lock or even a simple lock-and-key will suffice.

Consider painting, embroidering, or embossing your name on the sides of your golf bag. Some people even take it a step further and imprint their contact details with their names.

In case the bag happens to get lost there is a fighting chance of recovering it again. See if you can get a professional to emboss your name and contact details on the handles of your clubs.

This won’t prevent theft, but at least you know you have a better chance at finding lost clubs again.
